2010 Recap

75th Annual Golf Classic

Hockley Valley Resort

The 2010 Father and Three Sons Golf Classic was held on Friday, August 20th at Hockley Valley Resort in Mono, Ontario – 10 minutes west of Orangeville.

The morning, which began a bit chilly but soon turned bright and sunny, was very relaxed, with overnight guests enjoying a buffet breakfast at the resort before heading poolside for the usual pre-round logistics, beginning with Registration.

2010 Event Summary

To commemorate 75 years of the Father and Three Sons Golf Classic, there were several logoed items provided in the welcome package, including lapel pins, hats and watches.

In addition to the Registration, the Family Pictures and Fathers Meeting all took place on various patios around the pool. With no need to rush from one place to the next, there was ample time for everyone to reacquaint themselves with other families and compare notes on how the previous day’s scramble went for those that participated. Also poolside, a wonderful pre-round brunch buffet was put on for the players, allowing everyone to get fuelled up and ready for the round.

Because the first tee is a fair distance from the facilities, the ceremonial tee off took place off the back of the 18th green, hitting back towards the fairway. For the second year, Tom Critelli (now a year wiser at 83) and Jaden Condotta (aged 9) were the oldest and youngest golfers in the tournament. First year newcomer Devin Butler, also 9, joined them on the tee.

Devin stepped up and graciously showed Tom where the trouble was on the right. Not to be outdone on manners, Jaden then teed up and showed Tom where the trouble
was on the left. Tom, thankful for the insights, stepped up and put one right down the middle.

Following the group photo and some official words of welcome from Michael Luciani of the Host Family, golfers headed to their carts and moved out onto the course for the shotgun start.

Despite the chilly start to the day, by the time play began, the day had become what it would remain throughout – about 25 degrees, only a few clouds and a slight breeze. In short, a perfect day for golf.

The course was in good condition and proved a good test for the golfers. Players who had taken the opportunity to play in the Thursday Family Scramble were slightly better prepared, as the many blind shots and unforgiving fescue presented considerable challenges for those unfamiliar with the layout.

The pace of play was good, with the notable exception of Hole #12, which throughout the day saw backups as many as 4 foursomes. When it was his group’s turn to wait, Chris Boddy decided that what everyone needed was some tunes to make the wait more enjoyable. In a manner not unlike Rodney Dangerfield in “Caddyshack”, he suddenly produced a set of portable speakers and an iPod and got the group rocking.

It is quite likely that never before had anyone at Hockley Valley heard the iconic strains of “Sympathy for the Devil” blaring out from the tee deck of the par 3 hole.

Taking a cue from the Rolling Stones who always refused to abide by the decorum expected of their generation, an impromptu apple fight began amongst several family members gathered in wait. However, it was all in fun and short lived, with no injuries to report.

Despite the considerable delay at 12, the round finished in a reasonable time and left plenty of opportunity to freshen up after the round and enjoy some pre-banquet beverages.

The Banquet was hosted in the elegant ballroom at Hockley Valley, and was emceed by Richard Luciani, who once again welcomed all players and thanked the Adamo family, owners of Hockley Valley and a New Family in the tournament.

John Nash was called upon to say grace, after which the tables were called out to begin the supper, which was a wonderful array of food laid out buffet style. As is customary, the Fathers led off followed by the Host Family, followed by the rest of tables, who many in the dining room cat-called did not seem a random order, with good natured accusations of bribery hurled about.

During the supper, names were randomly pulled from a bucket to determine the winner of the many various prizes, which ranged from drivers to restaurant gift certificates to boxed sets of wine.

While making the various announcements, the Luciani family made special mention of the 20 year participating Finlayson Family, whose father, Fred, recently underwent a second knee replacement and son, Scott, is undergoing chemo treatment.

The Family Introductions were particularly raucous this year, as the third sons in seven New Families announced their rookie participation in the event. It seemed that each resulting roar and ovation was a little louder and a little longer than previous. With so many New Families joining in recent years, and with the youngest son doing the introductions, there were a couple of technical difficulties when some of the youngest of the group couldn’t reach the microphone. Ever the gracious emcee, Richard Luciani was quick to lend a hand.

Following the introductions, the various Award Winners were announced and the accompanying hardware handed out, after which some of the Fathers took it upon themselves to tell a few classic golf jokes. Most, but not all, remembered that there were some young lads in the room, who quite likely went home with a few new words in their vocabulary.

The evening concluded with the handing off of the Host Family trophy, presented by the Luciani Family to the Gallo Family, who said they were looking forward to hosting the 2011 tournament at Tangle Creek in Barrie, Ontario.

2010 Family Scramble

The 2010 Father and Three Sons optional Family Scramble took place at Hockley Valley in Orangeville, Ontario on Thursday, August 19th.

By mid-afternoon, severe looking clouds and torrential rains had moved into the area, leaving those headed towards the course nervous about whether the event would even go ahead.  However, by the time the first groups were scheduled to tee off, the bad weather had moved out and the rounds were played under sunny and clear, albeit muggy, conditions.

The course was in great shape and while the pin placements were favorable, the many blind shots and unforgiving fescue ensured that there wouldn’t be any record low scores on this day.  In the end, it was the Critelli Family who bested all others, carding a respectable -9.

Following the round, many families headed to their on-site rooms at the resort to freshen up before joining the other families for a poolside gathering in comfortable weather.

As evening set in, a great assortment of hot finger foods was put out for the enjoyment of the group.  Some of the families took the Host Family Luciani’s suggestion that they bring wives and kids and other family members to enjoy the resort, and to attend the poolside receptio

Others, too, took the suggestion to bring bathing suits and enjoy a moonlight dip, which resulted in a few players breaking the cardinal rule of pools: “no horseplay”, much to the delight of the rest of group who took in the spectacle and overall spent the evening visiting with and making friends in the tournament.
